Music - Refuge
These songs were recorded sometime during the summer of 1997. Nancy Beine (not her name anymore - she got married a while back and I don't know what her name is now) is a great, great singer (and a nice person too!) - she nailed all of her tracks in one take. We played a couple of shows together and most of our songs were covers, as are 3 of the 4 MP3s from this demo tape. I used the Korg X3 extensively to have the drums, bass, and keyboards back us up during the shows, and I just used those programs for the tape. We used a Tascam 4-track recorder for the demo. Sometimes her voice is a bit too hot in the mix. We never sold the tape; we just made it for friends and bars if they wanted a taste of what we did.
I Can't Make You Love Me This Bonnie Raitt cover was at Nancy's request. I remember listening to the song, thinking to myself, "how in the world am I going to pull off the piano part?" Of course, I didn't know it was Bruce Hornsby playing the keys - I guess it was good that way so I wasn't overtly intimidated. Let's just say there's a lot of tweaking to the keyboard parts.
Time After Time This is based on Tuck and Patti's interpretation of the Cyndi Lauper song. We played this at my wedding reception - Liz loves the song, so I had to make sure I made a digital version of it.
Good Enough This is a Sarah McLachlan song. I like how we pulled it off - it's very moody and dark. Again, Nancy does a great job with the vocals.
The Rose in the Field (2nd version) I would take this version over the first one any day. Nancy's vocals are stronger, and the song restructuring makes the song so much better.
