"Polaris", by Jack McDevitt
I finished this book a couple of days ago. Overall, I liked it - it's a good sci-fi read. The first chapter really grabbed me - the description of people being able to witness the rare event of a white dwarf plowing through a sun was very good. The rest of the story dragged on a bit at times as people tried to figure out what happen on a ship called Polaris that was there to witness the celestial event - all of the passengers disappeared. I wasn't bored, though, that's for sure - the story kept me hooked. I liked that the main character's story wasn't told through him (Alex) in the first person; it was done through his friend/co-worker, Chase. Just a difference change of pace, and I enjoyed it.
I think I'll pick up some more works from McDevitt to see if I really like his style.
