"The Shawshank Redemption" Soundtrack

Over the holidays I picked up the 10th anniversary edition of "The Shawshank Redemption", which included the soundtrack. I'm usually not a big fan of movie soundtracks as I find them hard to stand alone from the movie. This soundtrack suffers a bit from that same fate, but overall I find it enjoyable to listen to, especially the tracks, "Brooks Was Here", "Compass and Guns", "So Was Red", and "End Title", as I can distinctly remember the scenes that these tracks accompany.

If you asked me today what my favorite movie of all time was, it has to be "Shawshank." No movie floored me as much as this one did when I first saw it. I thought it was good, and then things suddenly changed about 2/3rds of the way through, and then the storyline leveled me as a ton of things fell into place. I had to watch it again to see it with my new-found perspective (if you've seen the movie you know what I'm talking about). There's so much subtlety in the movie, so many characters - every time I see it I love it. It's not a happy movie at times (its depictions of prison rape, while not visually graphic (like the one in "American History X" (and yes, I'm sure there are "worse" ones out there, but...really, let's not go there, OK?)), are disturbing), although I find its story to be very moving and positive. There's a lot of good quotes from the movie, but the one I love best is:

Get busy living, or get busy dying.

In my mind it is one the most uplifting (and direct) statements I've ever heard.
