Why I Don't Visit Forums
For the Charity Fragathon event, Chris and I have been trying to promote it using whatever viable medium possible. Today I posted a simple message in 5 Halo3-related boards. It reads:
If you live in the Twin Cities area, there's going to be a Halo 3 tournament for charity on Sept. 24th, 2008 from 6 to 10 PM at the Microsoft office in Bloomington. You can find all of the details at http://www.charityfragathon.com/.
Now, I personally never visit forums unless they're technically-focused (i.e. programming languages, component products, etc.). I did it a fair amount in college, but the number of asshats online grew beyond what I could tolerate, and with the rise of blogs and other communication vehicles, forums went by the wayside. But they're still very popular, so I thought I'd post a message and hope that we can get some more folks to show up.
Not surprisingly, it didn't take long before some complete assholes chimed in with their wit and intelligence. Take a look at this thread. My favorite comment (from someone named Don Dax) was this:
Did you know that 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 percent of the people in the wolrd don't live there.
and 100% don't care?
Let's do the math, shall we? According to Google, there's 6,602,224,175 people in the world. So, given Don's figure, that would leave...nobody living in the Twin Cities area. And, looking at the current sign-up count on the registration page, 25 people do care.
So Don FAILS on both figures.
But that's exactly why I don't deal with forums. Too much noise, too much crap, too much garbage.
And yes, I made a friend request to Don. I just had to do it :)
