Yesterday I started a new gig with the client (as usual, client names will be kept private). This one is starting off on an … odd note, because they’re requiring me to read two books (“Refactoring” (which I read years ago) and “Refactoring to Patterns” (which I haven’t read yet)). In all my years as a consultant I’ve never had a client require me to read a technical book before I start the gig (I actually go on-site when I get back from vacation next week - I’m billing in the office until then). It’s not that I think it’s “wrong” to make this request - it’s just … odd. Sometimes I’ll get documents on what the work involves, but never a homework assignment ;).
